|
My first woodworking job kept three of us busy the spring of '46.
Three 16 year old upstarts had landed a contract with Sears Roebuck
& Co. to manufacture small bookcases. With one small Montgomery Ward
tilting table bench saw, and a single 1/2 sheet portable sanding
machine, we worked many long hours for what now seems like a pittance.
I
didn't contract for another woodworking job until 1983, when I started
Chuck Davis Cabinets. Not that I was idle, building furniture for
family use—end tables, curio cabinets.
During those intervening 37 years, I graduated from high school,
college, and attended some graduate classes. Interspersed with attending
classes, I had some stints with automobile assembly, two years in the
Army during the Korean "Police Action", electrical overhead
power line design, computer programming, managing programmers, computer
operations management, computer system analysis, and
performing technical review of software documentation.
As a member of the data processing department of Mattel Toys, I
designed and supervised the implementation of an order processing system
in 1964. The system was easily modified and enjoyed more that a ten year
life in an industry that re-invented itself each year, just before the
annual Toy Fair.
Early in my employment at IBM, I designed and supervised
the implementation of the first computer system that utilized remote
(out of state) terminals for Credit Union applications. The system
design remained basically unchanged for over ten years.
Later activity required many hours
over a nine year span of reviewing draft software users manuals for
technical accuracy. Product announcement and other sales documents
were reviewed for truth-in-advertising aspects.

While at IBM, I again turned to woodworking as
a release. In 1983, I formed Chuck Davis Cabinets. As it turned out, at
about the same time we decided to build a new home based on plans that I
had created. By the time I had created all the cabinets, fashioned the mill work, and passage way
doors and casings, my skills had been
raised to a new level.
At left is an item in the entrance hall. Red oak
cabinets, walnut drawer fronts and panels, cocobolo served as the hinges
(with the help of some brass pins).
The entry door and side lights are
red oak and walnut panels. The panels have insulation between an inside
panel and a separate outside panel. Not apparent in this photo is the
stained glass exterior panels.
|
| No sooner was the last piece of our new house
put in place in July 1985, than I began to receive requests for
cabinetry for others. The second project to be completed is shown at
right.
In mid 1988, we moved to a residence just north of
Prunedale in the community now know as Royal Oaks.

In late 1989, IBM offered an enhanced early retirement
proposal that I couldn't refuse. I "retired" on March
31, 1990.
|

|
 |
The first woodworking project after retirement was for an
upscale kitchen in Pebble Beach, CA. The client happened to be a retired
IBM Group Executive. There were other add on projects for these folks.
|
| Having never received formal training in
woodworking, I learn as much from other's writings as from thoughtful
and deliberate trial (& error).
Unlike most folks in the industry, throughout my woodworking
career, I had never been without the means to purchase the proper
equipment for the job, or the best of materials. This is reflected in
the extraordinary quality of my finished projects. When a piece is ruined,
I simply removed another piece of raw material from stock and started again (with some
exceptions, of course). Drill bits were never sharpened, only
replaced.
Approximately fifteen woodworking and cabinetmaking
magazines and journals were perused each month. The magazines and
journals were all reviewed with care, then stacked for future reference. As it turns out, most
were never opened
again, but those on the bottom of the stack were discarded when
over 12" high. Catalogs were also scanned for ideas, especially
those of my wholesale suppliers. During the month of July, 2000, I
sold the business and we moved to Henderson, Nevada. Since our arrival, we
have been busier than at any time in our lives. Del Webb's advertising of
an "Active Adult Community" was dead on! |
