In 1983, Chuck Davis Cabinets was created to pursue a life-long desire to
work with wood.
Several years later, I happened to buy the 1990 edition of Modern
Cabinetmaking at the local Hartnell
College's
book store. The book was a complete, well organized text book written by Dr. William D.
Umstattd. Dr. Umstattd is an Emeritus Associate Professor of Technology
Education from the Ohio State University.
Dr. Umstattd had gathered information over a long period, and published in
1990 as Modern Cabinetmaking. Naturally, the book contained many dated procedures
and photographic images.
Shortly thereafter, Dr. Umstattd, Goodheart-Willcox Company, Inc. and I
entered into an agreement to update the book. Approximately 100 critical
revisions were made, and published in 1997.
After many months, the text was completely revised and published in
April 1999. New images exceed 420, with 294 by Gene Davis Photography,
Newberg, OR. His photos were also used on cover, shown below. The number

In his review, Antonio P. Dias, states: "The
book is logically organized in much the same order as an actual
cabinetmaking project. It begins by covering the design process,
examining major design styles and considerations and progresses through
the rendering of those designs." Select the link for a
