Design and Layout

The design incorporated many of the features that I had dreamed of over the years of make-shift work areas. Most needs were satisfied.  Of course, many of the "wants" are still wanting.

Adequate ceiling height was one of the need that was satisfied. The walls were 10' high with the bottom of the glue-lam ridge beam 14'-6" off the floor.  The glue-lam also enabled a clear span of 25 feet.

Adequate electrical power, in the right place with the right voltage and amperage was a requirement. The design implemented included the following:
bulletCircuits with load sensors:
bulletThree  3-phase 240v circuits.
bulletOne 1-phase 120v circuit to Craftsman band saw.
bulletOne 1-phase 120v circuit to Castle TSM-20 pocket cutting machine.
bulletOne dedicated 1-phase 240v circuit to the dust collector. This circuit is energized when any piece of equipment attached any of the circuits with load sensors is operating.
bulletOne dedicated 1-phase 240v circuit to the compressor.
bulletOne dedicated 1-phase 240v circuit to the edge banding machine.
bulletFour 120v circuits for general shop usage. All include Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI)
bulletFour 120v duplex outlets are provided on each side of the shop built assembly table.
bulletLighting is provided by eight dual 80 watt fluorescent fixtures, three 4' x 6' windows.

Two 9' x 9' roll-up doors open to the drive. In this Central Coast section of California, the doors were open much of the time.

Storage:

Finished goods storage was located elsewhere, and this allowed more efficient use of the small space.

bulletHardwood storage capacity: 1,500 board feet, (sticked).
bulletThe loft provides an additional 100 sq. ft. of storage.
bulletSmaller end cuts are stored in 30" long sections of 16" and 10" diameter PVC pipe. Each pipe holds different species and thicknesses.
bulletEngineered wood panel storage capacity:
bullet50 - ¼" panels.
bullet11 - ½" panels.
bullet16 - 5/8" panels.
bullet35 - ¾" panels.

Engineered wood panel storage was designed to allow all material to lie flat, instead of standing on edge.

The shop and its equipment—A look back.

The Shop

The shop was designed and built in the fall of 1989. Thirty-two yards of concrete was poured into forms on Monday, October 16th. The next day, just as the World Series game was about to get underway at Candlestick Park, 95 miles to the north, the infamous San Andreas fault slipped. This slippage was dubbed the Loma Prieta Earthquake, due to its epicenter being near the 3,797' peak by that name. Loma Prieta was only seventeen air miles to the north. Neither the fresh concrete, nor our home suffered any damage.

The Equipment

In my estimation, my shop was well equipped to produce both face frame and frameless styles. Many pieces of this equipment appear in the illustrations in my text, Modern Cabinetmaking. Others simply didn't get in front of the camera when the film was exposed.

All equipment was purchased new. I am not particularly enthralled at repairing things, even when a bargain price is a draw. However, I have also never paid to have the brakes repaired on my vehicles. Even though most vehicles have had over 130,000 miles before trading.

In July, 2000, I sold all of the tools and material to Wainwright Construction, Inc. William (Bill) A. Wainwright, President. Bill now has a few duplicates in his shop.  For information regarding specific items, call Bill at 831-484-2318 or email: wldbil907@comcast.net
