Quality in cabinetmaking
Stock and "semi-custom" cabinets
In a repeat purchase framework, a stock cabinet manufacturer may be
able to build a "reputation" for quality among the firms
distributors. This reputation is gained by repeatedly delivering goods
to the project site that are complete and install with little or no
re-work required.
"Custom" cabinets
The term "custom" as used here means that the entire
project is designed and built to solve a single client's requirements
and expectations. "Custom" is also a grade of architectural
woodwork.
Quality standards/grades
Both the Architectural Woodwork
Institute and Woodwork Institute of
California establish and promote architectural woodworking
"quality grades". The Architectural Woodwork Quality
Standards Illustrated: 8th Edition, 2003
and Manual
of Millwork, 9th Edition, 1998 are their respective publications The
Woodwork Institute of California grades are similar, but a fourth grade
is added. These grades define quality at these levels:
The Woodwork Institute of California definitions for these grades
are:
Economy: This grade establishes a standard to meet the requirements of lower cost residential and commercial construction wherein
economy is the principal factor, also for use in storage room/utility areas.
Custom: This grade includes all the requisites of high quality millwork suitable for
all normal use in high grade construction, such as quality residential, school and
commercial buildings.
Premium: This grade, as the name implies, is a superior quality of materials and
craftsmanship, with a corresponding increase in cost. It is intended primarily for the
best of hardwood construction, but any species of wood may be specified.
Laboratory: This grade is for use in laboratory casework and countertops where chemical resistance
is of an added concern.
